Neuwiedia zollingeri is a kind of the genus Neuwiedia in the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). It comes from Southeast Asia .

description

Neuwiedia Zollingeri grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 45 to 70 cm. The roots arise both in the ground and above ground on the stem axis . The above-ground roots are 2.5 to 4 mm in diameter and are occasionally thickened at the ends. Sometimes the roots are hairy. The leaves are lanceolate to linear, their size varies greatly and ranges in length from 4 to 53 cm, in width from 1 to 7.5 cm. The leaf blade contains seven to 55 longitudinal veins, seven of which stand out clearly.

A terminal, racemose inflorescence is formed. In the variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Zollingeri it is hairless, at 7 to 9 cm quite short, it has 40 to 80  flowers . De Vogel reports on flowering plants in February, March and July. The variety Neuwiedia Zollingeri var. Javanica differs in its hairy inflorescence, which is up to 17 cm long and contains 30 to 60 flowers. The hair can be divided into glandular and glandular hairs, whereby the glandular hairs are mainly to be found on the petals. This variety has flowering plants all year round. The bracts of the flowers are lanceolate to linear, pointed, 10 to 35 mm long and 2 to 8 mm wide. The flower stalk becomes 2 to 5 mm long.

The flowers are yellow, in the case of the Neuwiedia Zollingeri var. Javanica variety also cream-colored, fragrant and 2.5 to 3 cm long. The three outer bracts are lanceolate with a length of 15 to 18 mm and a width of 3 to 4 mm. The inner bracts are slightly wider at 5 to 7 mm. A lip is hardly differentiated. The bracts of Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Javanica are a little longer at 20 mm. The ovary is 4 to 6 mm long. The column consists of three stamens and the stylus , the mm to a length of 4 to 8 are fused together at the bottom. The free part of the two lateral stamens measures 2 mm, the middle stamens 2.5 to 4 mm. The free part of the stamens is flattened in cross section. The anthers are lanceolate to linear, with the variety Neuwiedia Zollingeri var. Zollingeri they are up to 4.5 mm long, with var. Javanica up to 7.5 mm. The free part of the stylus measures 3 to 5 mm, in Neuwiedia Zollingeri var. Javanica up to 6 mm.

The fruit is a white, berry-like, fleshy capsule fruit that may open when ripe . It is round and measures 6 to 9 mm in diameter, the length is 8 to 10 mm plus a 2 to 3 mm long attached tip. The seeds are round with a diameter of 0.25 to 0.35 mm and two tiny appendages. Most of the flowers develop quickly into fruits, so that fruits can be seen in the lower part of the inflorescence and buds and flowers at the top.

Occurrence

Neuwiedia Zollingeri is widespread in tropical Southeast Asia. The variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Zollingeri is limited to the islands of Java and Sumatra, the variety Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Javanica inhabits the islands of Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Bali as well as southern Vietnam. Altitudes of 450 to 1300 meters are populated. The locations are in forests and on streams, with both moist and very dry places as locations.

Systematics and botanical history

Neuwiedia Zollingeri was first described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1857 . Neuwiedia javanica was described in 1914 by Johannes Jacobus Smith as an independent species and classified by de Vogel as a variety of Neuwiedia Zollingeri . De Vogel mentions Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Singapureana as a further variety , which is ranked as a species by other authors. Another variety is Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Annamensis (Gagnep.) Aver. It occurs in southern Vietnam.
