NeverSeconds is a blog created and written by Martha Payne, a Scottish student. In it she shares her thoughts and experiences eating the school meals at her elementary school in Lochgilphead.

description

Started on April 30, 2012 as a school writing project with the help of Martha's father David, she writes the blog under the pseudonym "VEG" (Veritas Ex Gustu - Truth through taste), with the subtitle "One primary school pupil's daily dose of school dinners " . Much like a restaurant review , the daily entries on the £ 2 school menu that Martha / "VEG" selected that school day include her thoughts on the food and its quality, the number of hairs counted in it, a health rating, a picture, and a total number of points based on a "food-o-meter" , which is up to 10 points.

The first complete entry of nine-year-old Martha on May 8, 2012 shows a picture of a slice of pizza , a single potato croquette , next to some sweet corn and a muffin for dessert. Her comment on this was: “I am a growing child and I have to concentrate all afternoon. I can't do that with just one croquette. ” And “ The good thing about my blog is that my dad now understands why I often come home completely starved. ”

The blog made local and national headlines after it aid and assistance by Koch and school menu Kampagner Jamie Oliver got that twittered : "Shocking but inspirational blog, keep it up!" . On June 15, 2012, the blog already reached 3 million visitors. Martha also started posting pictures of school lunches sent to her by children in Germany , Japan , Spain , Taiwan, and the United States . The popularity followed the interest of the media, Martha was a guest on the program "You and Yours" on the radio station BBC Radio 4 , and later even on the subject of an edition of "The Food Program" on BBC Radio 4. After NeverSeconds went viral, they met Martha's father the school board, who announced that all students can have unlimited portions of fruit, vegetables and bread.

Given the current income, Martha decided to donate the money to the aid organization Mary's Meals . Starting with GBP 50 from a magazine for the rights to publish her photos in an article, Martha originally set a donation target of GBP 7,000 on Just Giving in her 19th blog entry . By mid-June 2012, GBP 90,000 in donations had already been collected, which were used for the charity to build a new kitchen in the Lirangwe Primary School with 1,963 students in Blantyre, Malawi .

controversy

On June 14th, Martha was taken out of math class and taken to the headmistress office. There she was told that she could no longer take photos of her meal inside the dining room. This decision came from a higher authority and came from the administrative authority in Argyll and Bute , which was alarmed by the negative press and the effect it had on the staff in the school canteen. Specifically, there was concern about an article in the Daily Record newspaper showing a photo of Martha cooking with chef Nick Nairn, entitled “Time to fire the canteen cooks” . In response to the photography ban , Martha wrote an entry titled " Goodbye " announcing the decision of the administrative authority, followed by a comment from her father. The human rights group Big Brother Watch called this act "an authoritarian infringement on her civil liberties" . On June 15, after a storm of protests on the Internet, the agency released a press release in which it initially defended the decision.

Still, after an intervention by the local SNP politician, Scottish MP and Education Secretary Mike Russell , Councilor Roddy McCuish finally said on BBC Radio 4's "World at One": "There's no place for censorship in Argyll and Bute Council and there never has Been and there never will be. I've just instructed senior officials to immediately withdraw the ban on pictures from the school dining hall. It's a good thing to do, to change your mind, and I've certainly done that. " As a result of the controversy, Martha's Just Giving appeal raised over £ 40,000 on the evening of June 15th and to £ 65,000 the day after. The total in July was £ 110,412. Over £ 123,000 in late November 2012.
