The New York Post (from 1801 to 1934 New-York Evening Post ) is a conservative tabloid from New York and one of the oldest daily newspapers in the United States. It is published today by the News Corporation , affiliated with Rupert Murdoch .

With a printed circulation of approximately 300,000 copies, it was ranked seventh among the daily newspapers in the United States in 2013, behind The Wall Street Journal , The New York Times , USA Today , Los Angeles Times , New York Daily News and Washington Post . In 2019 it officially rose to fourth place with a total print run of 426,129 copies.

history

The newspaper was founded in 1801 as the New York Evening Post by the politician Alexander Hamilton , who is regarded as one of the founding fathers of the United States .

At the time of Dorothy Schiff , who was the publisher of the newspaper for almost four decades, it had a liberal orientation. In 1977 it was bought by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation and soon, like all of his papers, put it on a conservative course. Patriotism and similar issues are emphasized. One of the Post's best-known editors is John Podhoretz , the son of the neo-conservative publicist Norman Podhoretz .

From 1988 to 1993 Murdoch had to give up the newspaper temporarily because the simultaneous ownership of various media interests was still limited at the time.

The circulation of the New York Post grew not least thanks to the competitive price of 25 US cents (2000 halved from 50 cents) by around 2007 to around 700,000 copies and has been falling steadily since then. In 2013, the print and online circulation totaled around 500,000. The newspaper is considered a traditional loss maker (estimated by Business Week to be between $ 15 million and $ 30 million a year), while competing Daily News is in the black.
