Coleman Bridge

The Coleman Bridge is a two-part bridge for vehicles over the Singapore River in Singapore . It crosses the river near Clarke Quay and connects Hill Street and New Bridge Road on the border between the Singapore River and Downtown Core planning areas . Today's Coleman Bridge is the fourth in the sequence, which is in the same place:

  • The first bridge, completed in 1840, was made of brick and had nine arches. The 20 meter wide bridge was sometimes also called New Bridge - after New Bridge Road at the southern end. It was designed by the Irish architect George Drumgoole Coleman.
  • In 1865 the first bridge was replaced by a wooden bridge. It was named Canning Bridge in honor of Lord Charles John Canning , which was later reversed by the city council.
  • After the traffic increased, a new three-lane bridge was built in 1886. It was then described as one of the most elegant bridges in Singapore.
  • In 1990 another bridge was finally built. It should do justice to the increasing traffic and enable better bus routes. The project was carried out in two phases: first half of the new bridge was built next to the old bridge and put into operation, then the old one was demolished and another carriageway was added, creating a double bridge. the architectural elements and decorations of the bridge from 1886 (such as lanterns, vaults, columns, etc.) were tried to be largely preserved.
