New Cairo ( Arabic القاهرة الجديدة, DMG al-Qāhira al-Ǧadīda ) is a planned city in the metropolitan area of Cairo in Egypt with the character of a suburb . The city has an area of about 30,000 hectares and is located on the southeastern edge of the al-Qahira Governorate , 25 kilometers from Maadi . In 2018 the population was 302,926. In the future, the city should be able to accommodate up to 5 million inhabitants.

The project should not be confused with the planned new capital of Egypt .

history

New Cairo is one of the new cities that have been built in and around Cairo to alleviate the congestion problem in downtown Cairo. It was founded in 2000 by a decree of the then President Husni Mubarak and was built in the following years. The area of the city was wrested from the desert. In the 2006 census, the population was around 122,000 people and rose to around 300,000 people by 2018.

On April 27, 2016, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi inaugurated the new headquarters of the Interior Ministry in New Cairo, which was moved from Cairo to New Cairo.

Infrastructure and economy

The city has a modern infrastructure and was planned by the government to specifically locate industries. There are dozens of factories in New Cairo. The city is connected to other cities by a network of bus routes and taxis, but does not have a subway system. The city gets its drinking water from a water system in the nearby city of Obour .

In the city is the Cairo Festival City , a 285 hectare real estate development project. It has parks, pools, gardens, walkways, commercial premises, a large mall, and a fountain.

Due to the high real estate prices, the Egyptian middle and upper classes live in New Cairo. The demand for real estate in the city is very high, as the city has an excellent and very modern infrastructure and facilities for Egyptian standards. However, it is criticized that the overwhelming majority of Egyptians cannot afford an apartment in New Cairo and that the planned population will therefore probably not be reached.

Several international and national educational institutions and universities have settled in the city. a. the American University , the German University and the New Cairo Academy .

religion

There are several mosques in New Cairo, but currently only one church , the Virgin Mary and St. Bishoy Coptic Church . The city is also home to a Coptic monastery. In September 2016, President Sisi approved the construction of a new Coptic Orthodox Church in the city.
