The Gmina Chełmek [ ˈxɛu̯mɛk ] is an urban-and-rural municipality in the powiat Oświęcimski of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland . Its seat is the city of the same name with about 9100 inhabitants.
geography
Katowice is about 20 kilometers northwest and Krakow about 50 kilometers east of the municipal boundaries. Neighboring communities are Bieruń, Chełm Śląski, Imielin, Jaworzno, Libiąż, the city and the rural community of Oświęcim (Auschwitz) .
history
In 1969 Chełmek received town charter . From 1975 to 1998 the municipality belonged to the newly formed Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
The city entered into a partnership with Leinefelde , a district of the city of Leinefelde-Worbis in Thuringia , Germany.
structure
The town-and-country community (gmina miejsko-wiejska) includes the town of Chełmek, the villages of Bobrek and Gorzów with a school administration office . Another place in the municipality is the Nowopole forest settlement.
traffic
The city is located on the DW780 voivodship road, which joins the DK44 national road from Oświęcim to Tychy . In the east, the DW780 ends in Krakow . The Autostrada A4 runs two kilometers north of the municipal boundaries. Katowice and Krakow-Balice international airports can also be reached via these roads .
The city lies on the railway line from Trzebinia via Oświęcim to Czechowice-Dziedzice .
