Chełmek [ ˈxɛu̯mɛk ] ( German Chelmek ) is a city in Poland in the southern part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with a little over 13,000 inhabitants.
Geographical location
Katowice is about 26 kilometers northwest and Krakow about 55 kilometers east of Chełmek.
history
The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1464. 1795, at the third partition of Poland , Chełmek came to Austria . In 1815 the city became part of the Krakow Republic until it was conquered by Austria after the Krakow Uprising . In 1856 it was connected to the rail network. After the First World War , Chełmek became part of the newly formed Poland. In 1939 the Wehrmacht marched into the town. In 1941 a satellite camp of the Auschwitz concentration camp was established. On January 25, 1945, the occupation by the Germans ended and Chełmek became part of Poland again. In 1969 the place received city rights . Six years later, during an administrative reform in Poland, the city was assigned to the newly formed Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship . After another reform in 1999, Chełmek became part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

Chełmek is located on the Voivodship Road 780. This joins the state road 44 from Oświęcim to Tychy about seven kilometers northwest . In the east, the 780 ends in Krakow . The A4 autostrada runs about 5.5 kilometers north of Chełmek. Katowice and Krakow-Balice airports can also be reached via these roads .
The city lies on the railway line from Trzebinia via Oświęcim to Czechowice-Dziedzice .
