The New Cross Hospital is a maximalversorgendes Hospital in Wolverhampton , which the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is supported and the University of Birmingham as a teaching hospital serves.

history

The Heart and Lung Center at New Cross Hospital opened in 2004

The New Cross Hospital was originally built as a poor house. Since the previously existing premises in Wolverhampton for this purpose were overcrowded at the end of the 19th century , a total of 50.5 acres of land in the "New Cross" district in the eastern part of Wednesfield was purchased on behalf of the city authorities for 11,218  pounds sterling . The foundation stone for the new building was laid in September 1900 and the building, which covered an area of six acres, was officially opened three years later on September 24, 1903. The total cost of construction was 156,879 pounds sterling.

The New Cross Hospital hit the national headlines with a murder on February 12, 1959: the nurse Martha Giles was found killed and stabbed to death on a lawn in the hospital. An Indian doctor from New Cross Hospital was arrested as a suspect a little later, but after a short time there were considerable doubts about his possible perpetrator. Nevertheless, the doctor - driven by the police investigation and the resulting family problems - committed suicide . The crime has not yet been solved.

The construction of the first hospital building in today's sense was carried out by the construction company Alfred McAlpine and completed in 1970. In 1994, the previously independent hospital was taken over by the newly founded Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

In 2004, the £ 57 million Heart and Lung Center , the UK's first specialist heart center, opened. The New Cross Hospital Heart and Lung Center also performed the UK's first open heart surgery using robotic surgery in October 2012 .
