New Day Rising is the fourth studio album by the American alternative / punk band Hüsker Dü . It was released in January 1985. The music magazine Rolling Stone ranks it at number 488 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time and the theme song at number 96 of the 100 best guitar songs of all time .
backgrounds
"New Day Rising" was recorded even before the previous album "Zen Arcade" was released. With the album, the band combined the punk attitude of the previous albums with a better and epic sound, which is atypical for punk, and reduced the speed of the songs. The pieces are by Bob Mold and drummer Grant Hart. The songwriter could be recognized by the fact that whoever sang a piece had also written it. The piece "I Apologize" is regarded as the reference work for guitarist Bob Mold and is considered one of the best guitar anthems of the 1980s. In the piece "Celebrated Summer" the band used an acoustic guitar as a solo instrument for the first time . The song was distributed to various radio stations along with the title track of the album as a promo single in December 1984.

reception
The Rough Guide to Rock describes the album as the first serious mix of pop music and hardcore and notes that with songs like "Books About UFOs" an ironic sense of humor has found its way into the lyrics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic emphasizes the melodiousness of the songs and assigns the album to postpunk . The Rolling Stone credits the album with a great influence on bands like Nirvana .
