According to singer Larando Romo, the album title New Southern describes the lifestyle and mindset of the band.

"It's the same attitude, the same anger and the same determination of the rebels who lived before us and who stood up for justice against all odds."

- Larando Romo

As examples of these rebels, Romo named personalities such as John F. Kennedy , Mahatma Gandhi and John Lennon .

In Words of Wisdom it comes to authorities to question. As an example, Romo cited people who tell other people how to live their lives. Path to Pain criticizes people who interfere in the concerns of others. Wake Up deals with governments that close the doors for certain social classes. According to Zain Smith, 100% Pure American Rage is a political song that is about changing circumstances and rebelling against things that are wrong. Black Heartbeat is about relationships between two people.

The front of the album cover shows two soldiers from the American Civil War . Death comes ridden from behind on a horse . Larado Romo stated in an interview that both soldiers are afraid of death and will find it because they have brought their own situation to themselves.
