The Newbeats were an American pop band that existed from 1964 to 1974.
history
From 1963 the brothers Dean and Mark Mathis and Larry Henley belonged to the formation. The brothers had previously released records as a duo, Henley joined the band in 1963 during a gig in Shreveport, Louisiana . In the summer of 1964, Bread and Butter reached number 2 on the US Billboard charts and number 15 in the UK. The record was released on Hickory Records by Wesley Rose in Nashville , where the band was named; in Germany her singles appeared on CBS .
The New Beats were then in American Bandstand of Dick Clark on as well as other popular US shows. Later that year, the follow-up track Everything's Alright , written by John D. Loudermilk , made it into the US Top 20. The Break Away (From That Boy!) , Written by Dean and Mark Mathis, only reached 40th place in 1965, but then followed by Run, Baby, Run, her third big hit, which made it to number 12 in the US charts. Then they mainly recorded songs from Acuff-Rose , the publishing company that owned Hickory Records. The Newbeats did not have any other top 10 hits; Run, Baby, Run made it into the UK's top 10 in 1971.
The falsetto voice of Henley is striking - underlined by a tight rhythm of the studio musicians and the background vocals of the Mathis brothers in their hits - which shapes the songs. The Newbeats thus interpret u. a. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction from the Rolling Stones , Help! by the Beatles and Oh, Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison in their own way. Tough Little Buggy, on the other hand, which was released in Germany as the B-side of Bread and Butter , is a classic surf song in the style of Jan and Dean .
Larry Henley died in late 2014 at the age of 77.
