Newmachar is a town in the Scottish council area of Aberdeenshire . It is located approximately twelve kilometers southeast of Inverurie and 14 kilometers northwest of central Aberdeen .

history

A stone or bronze age cairn north of Newmachar testifies to the early settlement of the area. To the southwest is a standing stone . In 1760 the village was northwest mansion Straloch House built. This was initially owned by the Gordon clan , but then passed to the Ramsay clan .

Newmachar is the birthplace of the cartographer Robert Gordon of Straloch, born in 1580 . In 1961, 439 people lived in Newmachar. Since then the number of inhabitants has increased steadily to 2,480 in 2011.

traffic

The incipient in Aberdeen and in Macduff ending A947 is the main road of the village. It connects Newmachar near Aberdeen to the A90 (Fraserburgh– Edinburgh ). In the neighboring Oldmeldrum also crosses of Ellon according Dufftown leading A920 .

In the 1860s, Newmachar received its own station along the newly opened Formartine and Buchan Railway , a branch line of the Great North of Scotland Railway . The line closed in 1979 has since been dismantled. The Newmachar station building still exists.

With the Aberdeen Airport International is an international airport located about seven kilometers south of Newmachar.
