Ngalia Basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ngalia Basin (English: Ngalia Basin ) is a small approximately 15,000 km² sedimentary basin of the Australian craton (mainland core) in the south of the Northern Territory of Australia .

In the sedimentary basin there are about 6 km thick marine and non-marine deposits, which formed from the Neoproterozoic to the Carboniferous from 1000 to 300 million years ago. The rocks in the basin are limestone , mudstone , siltstone , quartzite and ice age sediments . With the other nearby sedimentary basins, the Amadeus Basin , Georgina Basin and Officer Basin , all formed in the same period, it is believed to have been part of the Centralian Superbasin in Australia that was fragmented by various sequences of tectonic activity.

The basin contains significant deposits of uranium that have been mineralized in sandstone deposits , and deposits are being explored for oil and natural gas .
