Nguyễn Văn Lai (born June 10, 1986 ) is a Vietnamese athlete who competes in both obstacle courses and medium and long-distance races .

Athletic career

Nguyễn Văn Lai gained his first international experience at the Southeast Asian Games 2009 in Vientiane , where he won the bronze medal behind the Filipino Rene Herrera and Patikarn Pechsricha from Thailand in the obstacle course in 9: 38.80 minutes and had to end his run over 1500 meters early. In 2011 he took the 5000-meter race at the Asian Championships in Kobe in part, finishing in that ranking 13. Then he won at the Southeast Asia Games in Palembang in 14: 41.30 minutes, the bronze in the 5000 behind the Indonesians Agus Prayogo and Jauhari Johan and won also over 10,000 meters in 31: 22.20 min bronze, while he was fourth in the obstacle course in 9: 09.66 min. In 2013 he won the Southeast Asian Games in Naypyidaw with new national records of 14: 19.35 min over 5000 meters and with 29: 44.82 min also over 10,000 meters. In 2014 he took part for the first time in the Asian Games in Incheon , South Korea , where he finished eleventh over 5000 meters in 14: 08.68 minutes. The following year he won the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in a new player record of 14: 04.82 minutes and was sixth over 10,000 meters in 32: 25.43 minutes.

In 2017 he won the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur in 14: 55.15 minutes over 5000 meters and won the silver medal behind Indonesian Prayogo over 10,000 meters in 30: 45.64 minutes. He then reached sixth place in the 3000 meter run at the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat in 8: 24.69 minutes . In 2018 he participated again in the Asian Games in Jakarta , where he finished seventh in 14: 56.09 min. The following year he was eighth in the Asian Championships in Doha in 14: 26.81 min and at the World Military Games in Wuhan he reached 14th place in 14: 38.78 min. He then won the Southeast Asian Games in Capas in 14: 32.42 min the silver medal behind the Thai Kieran Tuntivate and over 10,000 meters he secured the bronze medal behind Tuntivate and the Indonesian Prayogo in 30: 29.74 min.

In 2010 Nguyễn became Vietnamese champion over 5000 and 10,000 meters and in the obstacle course. In 2013 he won the championship titles over 5000 and 10,000 meters again. In 2019 he won the 5000 meters. He completed a coaching degree at Bac Ninh Sports University .
