Nh. Dini

Nh. Dini (born February 29, 1936 in Semarang , Jawa Tengah as Nurhayati Sri Hardini ; † December 4, 2018 ) was an Indonesian writer .

Life

Already in early childhood Dini's interest in stories was awakened by traditional Indonesian legends passed down orally in her family, as well as productions by theatrical ensembles passing through. When her father passed away in 1950, shortly before moving to junior high school , she began writing short stories to process her feelings.

As a teenager, she wrote poems and texts that were published in smaller magazines and the readings of which were broadcast on Radio Republik Indonesia .

In 1956 she moved to Jakarta and in the following years worked full-time as a stewardess for the Garuda Indonesia airline . In Jakarta she gained access to the city's literary scene, which was still heavily male-dominated at the time. She took part in literary discussions and conferences with the writer Ajip Rosidi , with whom she was to have a lifelong friendship.

She achieved national fame in 1956 with the short story volume Dua Dunia ( Two Worlds ) and the short story Hati yang damai ( A Peaceful Heart ) published in 1960 .

In 1960 she married the French diplomat Yves Coffin , with whom she lived in Japan , Cambodia , the Philippines , the United States and France for the next two decades . In 1961 the daughter Marie-Claire Lintang and 1967 the son Pierre-Louis Padang alias Pierre Coffin were born.

Her novel Pada Sebuah Kapal ( On a Boat ), published in 1973, became a bestseller. La Barka (1975), Keberangkatan (1977) and Namaku Hiroko (1979) followed later . Between 1978 and 2003 she published an autobiographical series of "Memorable Stories" by Rangkaian Cerita Kenangan .

While her husband was working as consul general in Detroit in 1977, Dini separated from him and moved back to Paris . The marriage was divorced in 1984.

From 1980 Dini lived again in Indonesia and settled in Kampung Sekayu, Semarang. In 1986 she founded the children's library Pondok Baca Nh.Dini there .

She wrote a comprehensive biography of the Indonesian poet Amir Hamzah , which was first published in 1981. In addition, volumes of short stories such as Tuileries (1982) and novels such as Orang-orang Tran (1985) and Jalan Bandungan (1989) were created.

In 2003 she received the SEA Write Award .

Dini last lived in Sleman near Yogyakarta . Since 2008 she has not been able to continue working on another planned novel and on her memoirs due to health problems.

She died on December 4, 2018 after a traffic accident.
