The non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of the influenza virus is a protein that during an infection in the course of an immune evasion the immune response reduces.

properties

The non-structural protein 1 does not occur in the virion , which is where the name comes from. NS1 binds to viral RNA and the matrix protein 1 . Furthermore, it binds poly (A) and U6 snRNA NS1 inhibits the proteins CPSF4 and the poly-A-tail binding protein 2 ( PABPN1 ) and inhibits polyadenylation in an infected cell and thus the export of cellular mRNA from the nucleus into the cytosol , whereby comparatively more viral RNA is exported and protein biosynthesis is available. The NS1 has two nuclear localization signals and an essential nuclear export signal for the transport between the cell nucleus and cytosol . NS1 also inhibits protein kinase R and TRIM25 in the course of immune evasion, which reduces the ubiquitination of DDX58 and consequently the induction of type I interferons . This makes NS1 a virulence factor . The NS1 gene lies on the same genomic segment as the NS2 gene .
