Nick Enright

Nicholas Paul "Nick" Enright AM (born December 22, 1950 in Maitland , New South Wales , † March 30, 2003 in Sydney ) was an Australian author , screenwriter and actor .

Life

After completing his Bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney , Enright worked as an errand boy at the Nimrod Street Theater in Sydney. After he began training as a director at the Melbourne Theater Company, he received a scholarship to study directing at New York University , which he graduated in 1977. Back in Australia he wrote numerous stage productions and occasionally appeared on stage. Many of his pieces have also been published in book form. From 1983 to 1984 he directed acting training at the National Institute of Dramatic Art . In 1993 he and George Miller were nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Screenplay for Lorenzo's Oil .

Enright died of complications from cancer at the age of 52 . After his death, the musical The Boy from Oz with Hugh Jackman in the role of Peter Allen was produced on Broadway , an adaptation of the book by Enright by Martin Sherman . In 2004 he was posthumously named a Member of the Order of Australia .
