Nico Vega is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 2005 .

history

Nico Vega was founded in 2005 by Michael Peña and Aja Volkman, the band name was derived from the name of Peña's mother. After an initial phase of discovery and a first self-published EP in 2006, Peña left the band in order to take care of his acting career and his family. A little later, Thomas Anderson became aware of the band at a concert and signed them to MySpace Records . There the band released their second EP and in 2009 their first studio album Nico Vega . Tours with Neon Trees , Shiny Toy Guns and Gavin Rossdale followed . In 2012 Nico Vega switched to the Five Seven Music label , where they released the EP Fury Oh Fury in early 2013 .

Nico Vega gained broader awareness through the songs Beast , from their 2009 debut album, and Fury oh Fury, which were used in the trailers for the computer game BioShock Infinite . Volkman described this as " one of the biggest things that ever happened to your band" ( "[...] kind of one of the biggest things that's ever happened to my band" ). Sales of the single increased by 4000% in the first two weeks after the trailer was released.

In June 2016, Aja Volkman announced on the band's official Facebook page that Nico Vega was taking an indefinite break. At the end of 2016, Volkman went on tour as a solo artist. From 2011 to 2018 she was married to Dan Reynolds of the Imagine Dragons . After a nearly two-year hiatus, Volkman announced the return of the band in April 2018. It was followed by the single Little Operator in the same month and the EP Wars in September of the same year.

Trivia

The song "Beast" was used in trailers for the films The Collector (2009) and Jack Reacher (2012). In addition, the song was used in the television and cinema commercial and in the launch trailer together with "Fury oh Fury" for BioShock Infinite . It is also used in a modified form in the finished game in the start menu.

The release of BioShock Infinite catapulted Nico Vega to number 1 on the Next Big Sound Billboard charts, but it did not rank in the Top 100.
