The Collection - The Collector 2

The Collector - He Always Takes One is an American horror film released in 2009 . Initially it was supposed to be a prequel to the Saw series , but the decision was made against it and instead signed a contract with the scriptwriter for Saw IV , V and VI . Still, there are some similarities to the Saw films. In 2012 the sequel The Collection - The Collector 2 was released .

action

After the Chase family move to a remote home in the middle of nowhere in Detroit, Arkin O'Brien is hired to fix the windows and doors. He later meets his daughter and wife, who owe a dangerous loan shark and need money. His weekly earnings are not high enough to pay off their debts. Arkin O'Brien plans to rob his employer Michael Chase's safe that night in order to raise the necessary money. But he is not alone, a masked sadistic serial killer called "The Collector" has brought the family into his power, riddled the house with traps and locked everything. Arkin cannot prevent most of the family members from being tortured and murdered. Only the youngest daughter Hannah manages to hide from the masked murderer. O'Brien tries to find a way out of the deadly house to save his life and little Hannah. He himself falls into the clutches of the killer and is tortured by him, but is able to free himself. He finally manages to escape with Hannah, but is hit by a police car and seriously injured. O'Brien is transported to the hospital in an ambulance. The car has an accident and the film ends with the "Collector" kidnapping O'Brien from the ambulance and driving off with him in a white van.

Censorship in Germany

The FSK only granted the 18 release after several censorship cuts, so that on May 28, 2010 only one cut version of the film was released. Many crucial scenes had to be cut out, which significantly shortened the peaks of violence in the film. A total of 21 cuts were used, which shorten the running time by 1 minute and 57 seconds.

After a subsequent examination at the SPIO , the heavy SPIO / JK seal was granted without any criminal liability , so that an uncensored version of the film was released on February 25, 2011. The uncut version was indexed in September 2016.

reception

The Collector achieved a Metascore of 29/100 points on Metacritic , based on 11 reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 30% of the reviews are positive. The average rating is 4.2 / 10 based on 69 reviews.

The film-dienst describes The Collector as a "repulsive torture porn thriller full of violence". Stefan Ludwig von Filmstarts states that with The Collector "the immediate tension of the individual scenes" is "more important than the great dramaturgical arc" for director Marcus Dunstan. Also, “The plot doesn't offer any great surprises”, as it is easy to guess “how the cat-and-mouse game in“ The Collector ”ends”. He thinks, however, that "thanks to the competently staged straight-forward action on the screen" you only come across the smaller weaknesses "on closer inspection".
