Nicolae Ciupercă (1940)

Nicolae Ciupercă (born April 20, 1882 in Râmnicu Sărat , † May 25, 1950 in Văcăreşti ) was a Romanian army general . He commanded the 4th Army in World War II .

Life

Between 1900 and 1902 he attended the general war school and received the rank of lieutenant . In 1907 he was promoted to first lieutenant and in 1911 to captain. In the same year he was accepted into the military academy, which he finished in 1913. In 1916 he became a major and in 1920 a lieutenant colonel . In 1930 he was promoted to brigadier general.

From 1937 to 1938 he took command of the III. Army Corps and rose to division general . Then he became Minister of Defense. On June 2, 1940, he was appointed commander of the 4th Army and tried to avoid any skirmishes with the Soviet troops during the retreat from Bessarabia .

Raised army general in 1941 , he prepared his troops at the start of Operation Barbarossa to recapture the territories lost the previous year. The offensive did not begin until July 5, 1941, but the V Corps was pinned down by the Soviet defenses in the Tiganca area. The III. Corps managed to cross the Prut River, but then stopped. The situation of the 4th Army quickly improved thanks to the air support. General Ciuperca gave up the frontal attack in favor of enclosing the northern flank of the enemy. The 4th Army followed the retreating Soviet troops and was able to reach the entire width of the Dniester by July 26th .

On August 3, the 1940 border was exceeded and the 4th Army advanced towards Odessa . The Soviet coastal army was determined to hold Odessa. It was the first misunderstanding between the general and his superiors. Ciupercă's troops were reinforced by the I and IV Corps and began the attack on the city on August 18. While Marshal Antonescu and the General Staff advocated a general attack from several directions, General Ciuperca proposed concentration on a narrow land front between Dalnik and Tatarka. Because his attacks did not advance the siege of Odessa despite the overwhelming odds, he was replaced on September 10 by General Iosif Iacobici and retired on October 13, 1941.

After the war, Ciupercă joined the anti-communist organization Graiul Sangelui. On September 12, 1948, he was arrested by the communist authorities and imprisoned in Jilava Prison 64 . He died on May 25, 1950 in the hospital of Văcăreşti Prison.
