Nicholas N. Ambraseys (own anglicized spelling) studied civil engineering at the Polytechnio (National Technical University in Athens) with a diploma in 1952 and at Imperial College in London , where he was a student of Alec Skempton and Alan W. Bishop and in 1958 with a dissertation on PhD in the seismic stability of earth dams. From 1958 he was a lecturer at Imperial College, from 1968 reader and from 1974 professor. In 1968 he founded the Engineering Seismology Section (ESEE) there and was its head until his retirement in 1994.

He founded the British National Committee of Earthquake Engineering and was its first chairman.

In 1997 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . In 2004 he was the 44th Rankine Lecturer (Engineering Seismology and Geotechnics). Other honors were the election of Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and 2003 full member of the Academy of Athens .
