Nicolas de Bourgogne

Nicolas de Bourgogne or Nikolas von Burgund (also Burgundius , Bourgoigne or Niklaas van Bourgondien ; born September 29, 1586 in Enghien ; † January 4, 1649 in Brussels ) was a statesman , historian , poet and legal scholar .

Life

Bourgogne was born the son of a royal councilor and rent master . He graduated from the Humaniora at the Collège d'Houdoin in Mons . He then devoted himself to the study of fine arts and law at the University of Leuven , which he obtained as a lic. Iur. completed. After graduating, he settled in Ghent as a lawyer . In addition to his legal work, he was also active as a poet.

In 1627, Bourgogne followed a call from Elector Maximilian of Bavaria as a full professor of law at the University of Ingolstadt . He was also awarded a Dr. iur. PhD . Shortly afterwards he received the appointment to the Bavarian Council, the court historiographer and the dignity of Palatine . He worked as a consultant and appraiser for the Bavarian duke, in particular in the defense of the duke's claims to the electoral dignity.

Bourgogne returned to Brabant in 1639 and became a member of the Great Council of Brabant on July 31, 1639 . He remained in this office until his death.
