Nicolaus Beckmann (hydraulic engineer)

Nicolaus Beckmann ( April 14, 1743 - July 22, 1786 ) was a German hydraulic engineer.

Life

Beckmann was initially a postal administrator from 1763 to 1766, then studied mathematics and hydraulic engineering under the direction of his brother Johann Beckmann . In 1770/71 he toured the Netherlands, England and Germany with the support of the royal government. After his return he became dike conductor in Wilhelmsburg in 1771, dike inspector in 1774, and finally chief dike count in Harburg . Nicolaus Beckmann wrote numerous treatises on hydraulic engineering in the Hanover magazine and other organs and was a corresponding member of the Society of Sciences in Göttingen (from 1779) and a member of the Agricultural Society in Celle.
