from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolaus Boie the Elder (* late 15th century in Wesselburen ; † May 6, 1542 ibid) was a German reformer .

Life

Nicolaus Boie the Elder was born in Wesselburen; the year of birth is unknown. In 1509 and 1517 it can be proven that he belonged to the Catholic faith. He was strongly influenced both by his cousin Nicolaus Boie the Younger , who studied at the University of Wittenberg , and by Martin Luther , and converted to the Protestant faith. Then he preached and got his roommates and friends to convert, and later all the audience. Eventually he was forbidden to preach by the Wesselburen council, but he continued to campaign for the Protestant denomination in Wesselburen. When he was persecuted, he hid in a well for several days . In 1522 the official of the cathedral provost of Hamburg declared him a heretic for this reason . He was also expelled from the church ( anathema ). The reason given was that he first brought the Lutheran sect to Dithmarschen and preached secretly in the houses . But from day to day the number of Evangelicals in Dithmarschen increased . When the Flensburg disputation with Melchior Hofmann took place in Flensburg in April 1529 , Boie took part. He also took part in Hofmann's questioning there. In 1533, when the Reformation became more widespread, three preachers were appointed superintendent , among them Boie, who died on May 6, 1542 in his hometown.
