Nicolaus Höniger (* 1548 in Königshofen an der Tauber ; † September 1598 in Haltingen ) was proofreader for the Petri family of printers from 1570 to 1582 , first with Heinrich , then with Sebastian Henricpetri .

Höniger was born in Königshofen in 1548, attended the Latin school in Rothenburg ob der Tauber , and then went to high school at the pedagogy in Rostock . Then he was a student at the model high school in Strasbourg.

In 1572/73 he moved to Basel to start studying theology. At the time of enrollment , he was proofreader for Heinrich Petri. After completing his studies, however, he did not immediately take on a pastor's position, but, according to his own admission, stayed for 12 years in the Henricpetri printing house.

In 1570 or 1571 Höniger married Elisabet Grasser, with whom he had nine children in the course of the marriage. He took over a pastor's position in Efringen-Kirchen , from 1587 until his death in Haltingen .

Höniger was not only a proofreader, but also an author and translator, and so he left a whole series of works in this capacity. The sometimes rapid succession of translations that have been published under his name suggests that he was a great worker and was evidently able to translate extremely quickly.
