Nibelgau
The Nibelgau (sometimes also called Niebelgau ) is a landscape in southeastern Baden-Württemberg and a former county in Swabia, later in Württemberg.
geography
The Nibelgau is located in the Württemberg part of the Allgäu in the Ravensburg district and mainly includes the Aitrach valley around the city of Leutkirch . A short stretch of the upper reaches of the Eschach , the right source river of the Aitrach, still bears the old name Nibel today . The border of the Nibelgau runs to the north at Aitrach and Bad Wurzach , to the west along the Altdorf Forest , to the south from the Obere Argen to Martinszell an der Iller and to the east along the Iller. It largely coincides with the former Oberamt Leutkirch .
history
The Nibelgau is attested in documents between 766 and 1135. The count's rights were exercised by the Counts of Ulriche since the 8th century and by their descendants, the Counts of Bregenz , since the 11th century .
In the late 12th century they were followed by the Counts of Montfort , after the area of the Kempten monastery and the area around Eglofs had been separated around 1100 . In the 12th century, Zeil Castle became the seat of the count and gave its name to the county, which was acquired by Emperor Friedrich II around 1240 .
