history

“View of the caterpillar farm in the large Altdorf forest i. J. 1840 "

The Altdorf forest came to the Staufer from Guelph ownership around 1191 . When these became extinct in the middle of the 13th century, it came as imperial property to the Upper Swabian bailiff. Since then it has been legally divided into three parts:

  • "Common" forest as joint property of the Landvogtei, Haus Waldburg and the city of Ravensburg as well as other forests that belonged to the same and other owners individually.
  • "Strange" forests owned by the city of Ravensburg
  • other forests mainly owned by the Waldburg family and the Baindt monastery

The territorial rulership over the entire forest belonged to the bailiwick , common and strange forests were administered jointly by the forest court in Ravensburg, which was headed by a chief forester appointed by the city.

The rights of the Landvogtei and the city of Ravensburg passed to Württemberg in 1805/10 . From this the Waldburg house was resigned in 1835 with a 1570 acre forest.
