Niederweier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niederweier is a district of Oberweier in the town of Gaggenau in the Rastatt district .

The first mention of Niederweiers (as Niderenwilri) comes from a document issued on May 18, 1256 in Kuppenheim . Places with the ending -weier are mostly in the areas once occupied by the Romans. This name comes from the Roman villare and changed over time to today's name Weier . The settlement emerged from the medieval estate of the barons of Gemmingen, who owned a fortified water house at the end of the village in the direction of Muggensturm , which was also known as a castle. Its remains were preserved until the beginning of the 19th century. Carl Friedrich Jägerschmidt describes the ruin, which he wrongly identified as a Roman fort, as follows: " Here I found the well-preserved walls of a Roman fort 36 years ago which stood on a meadow and was broken down by the owner to the ground and the site The whole building trade formed a quadrangle surrounded by ditches about seventy feet into the square with a single gate, the arch of which was still in place, and two towers whose foundations documented the proof of their existence and the walls at that time were still 18 feet high you can see the place where the fort stood. During the demolition one found many arrows, spears, swords, several reed nails with arched heads, probably from the gate fittings, a gate handle, then various copper coins "The name of the Gemminger Hofgut also testifies to" Altes Schloss "in the district plan from 1785. The one belonging to the H Ofgut's extensive areas were cultivated by farmers who settled near the water house and built their farms there. Over time, the village of Niederweier developed from this settlement core in the form of a street village .

Niederweier only merged structurally with Oberweier in the 1970s. On April 1, 1972, the municipality of Oberweier was incorporated into Gaggenau.

Today it consists of four streets (Ortsstraße, Karlsruher Straße, Im Vuvich and Alter Weg) with a total of approx. 500 inhabitants. There used to be a small market square at the current intersection of Karlsruher Straße and Ortsstraße , on which a large winter linden tree stood, which can still be viewed. The place also has a bus stop.

Because of the clay deposits that exist in the surrounding area, the residents are referred to as Leimenrutscher with the local name .
