history
The once independent place was first mentioned in 1219. Until the late Middle Ages it was part of the Malsch mark and until the late 18th century it belonged to the Malsch parish. The Counts of Eberstein transferred Freiolsheim from their property to the Herrenalb monastery in the 13th century , but remained influential here due to their patronage over the monastery. They soon had to share the rule with the Margraves of Baden . After the Ebersteiners died out, the Count von Gronsfeld and the Baron or Count von Wolkenstein acquired their shares; Freiolsheim was part of the private county of Eberstein in Baden since the end of the 17th century . From the 16th to the 18th century it belonged to the Ottenau judicial district of the county. In the 19th century, Freiolsheim belonged to the Gernsbach office until its dissolution in 1872 , then to the Rastatt office. In the 1910 census, Freiolsheim was listed as a rural community in the Rastatt district with 206 inhabitants, Mittelberg and Moosbronn were separate districts with their own police administration and 47 and 25 residents respectively. In 1961, the municipality of Freiolsheim had an area of 8.38 km². On September 1, 1971, Freiolsheim was incorporated into Gaggenau.
