The Niedzwetzki apple ( Malus niedzwetzkyana ) is a plant from the kind of apples (some authors Malus ). For most authors, however, it is a synonym for Malus pumila Miller or a variety Malus pumila var. Niedzwetzkyana (Dieck.) CKSchneid. It occurs in Afghanistan , China , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan . Malus niedzwetzkyana is the wild stem form that Iwan Wladimirowitsch Michurin used in 1915 to breed attractive varieties like 'Belfler Krasny' ('Belfler Rot') or 'Krasny Standard' (Red Standard), which are characterized by red leaves, red flowers and red Fruits are characterized.

The Niedzwetzki apple is a mesophytic tree that reaches a height of 5 to 8 meters. Its crown is spherical. The bark of young twigs is dark purple. The bark of older twigs and the bark is reddish brown without thorns. The dark green or sometimes purple-red leathery leaves are egg-shaped or elliptical in shape. The leaf margin is serrated or notched.

The flowering period extends from April to May. The thin flower stalks are covered with white, felty hairs. The five-fold, hermaphrodite flowers have a diameter of 4 centimeters. The five free petals are intense pink or purple. The small to medium-sized fruits are dark red and have a very sour taste. The flesh is dark red.

status

The Niedzwetzki apple is endangered in its entire range and has become very rare. Although the distribution area is very large, the habitats are highly fragmented and there are only individual trees in disjoint areas . The main threats are pastures and agriculture.
