Niels Van Zandweghe

Niels Van Zandweghe (* 28. February 1996 in Bruges ) is a Belgian lightweight - rowers .

Niels Van Zandweghe finished in 2014 at the Junior World Championships in seventh place in the quadruple sculls . At the 2014 Youth Olympic Games , he rowed to fifth place in the single . In 2015 he reached sixth place at the U23 World Championships with the lightweight quadruple scull .

From 2016 Niels Van Zandweghe started together with Tim Brys in the lightweight double scull . At the European Championships in 2016 , the two finished fifth. Two weeks later they won the last qualifying regatta for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in Lucerne . However, Hannes Obreno won the race in the qualifying regatta and only one Belgian boat could be nominated in this way. The Belgian federation opted for Obreno, who was then Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro. Instead, Niels Van Zandweghe started in the lightweight single at the U23 World Championships and won the title.

He also competed in the lightweight single at the 2017 European Championships and won bronze behind Michael Schmid from Switzerland and Péter Galambos from Hungary . At the 2017 World Championships in Sarasota, Brys and Van Zandweghe started together again in the lightweight double sculls and finished fifth. In 2018 they finished fourth at the European Championships in Glasgow. At the World Championships in Plovdiv, they took third place behind the Irish and the Italians. In 2019 they won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Lucerne behind the Germans and Italians . At the Rowing World Championships in Ottensheim 2019 he reached 7th place in the lightweight double scull and rowed a quota place for Belgium for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
