Nigel James Gibbs (born November 20, 1965 in St Albans ) is a former English football player and current coach .
Player career
Nigel Gibbs played in his entire career as an active footballer for only one club and completed over 400 league games for Watford FC in just under 20 years . In 1983, at the age of 17, he got into professional business. Watford FC surprisingly came second in the previous season as a newcomer and thus, in addition to the sensational league placement, also qualified for a European competition for the first time. Nigel Gibbs could not repeat the previous year's performance with his team, but reached a secure 11th place in the table in the Football League First Division. In the 1983/84 UEFA Cup , Watford only failed in the round of 16 against Czech representatives Sparta Prague . Watford also impressed in the FA Cup and reached the final. There they lost 2-0 to Everton in the final , although the young defender Nigel Gibbs was not used. It was followed by more years in the secured midfield of the English first division before Watford collapsed completely in the 1987/88 season and was relegated to the second division as the penultimate. In the following season Gibbs was fourth with his team in the second division and only missed direct promotion in the play-off. However, Watford could not build on this partial success and also lost ground in the second division in the following years.
1995/96 Gibbs' team completed a disastrous season and rose as the penultimate even in the third division. For the defender it was personally the worst season of his career, as he was released in the summer of 1996 after numerous injuries. Nigel Gibbs continued to train with the team and was presented with a new contract a short time later. Under the returning coach Graham Taylor Watford managed 2 years later to return to the second division. In the following season, the team reached the sensational march into the Premier League with a victory over the Bolton Wanderers in the play-off final . With a negative record of 24 points from 38 games, however, the direct relegation of Gibbs' team followed in 2000. After a 9th and 14th place in the table in the following years, Nigel Gibbs ended his career as an active footballer in 2002.
National team
In Watford's relegation season 1987/88, right-back Gibbs completed 5 games for the England U-21 national team .
Coaching career
In 2005 Nigel Gibbs was a brief interim trainer at Watford and was then replaced by Adrian Boothroyd . He then acquired the UEFA coaching license and has been part of the coaching staff of the first division club Reading FC since 2006 . There Gibbs was initially responsible for the youth work. From 2009 to 2013 he was the official coach of the reserve team.
