Leucetius
Leucetius or (younger) Loucetius ( Gall. Loucetios, Leucetios ) was a Celtic (healing and / or war) god who, according to the Interpretatio Romana, was equated with the Roman god of war Mars . The name is derived from the Celtic word for "shine, shine"; the change between / eu / and / ou / is quite common. Another connection would also be possible to the old Irish lóchet (poetic for "lightning"); as would a transfer of the Italian Jupiter - epithet Lucetius in question.
Adoration
Leucetius was particularly revered by the Aresaks , a sub-tribe of the Treveri , and the Vangions . Together with Nemetona he had a temple in Mainz ( Mogontiacum , Roman province Germania superior ) in the area of the Aresaks. A second temple of the pair of gods was in Trier ( Augusta Treverorum ). Several dedicatory inscriptions dedicated to Loucetius come from the tribal area of the Treveri (all in the province of Germania superior): Ober-Olm , Worms ( Borbetomagus ), Grosskrotzenburg , Wiesbaden-Frauenstein , Strasbourg ( Argentorate ). An inscription from Bath ( Aquae Sulis ) in England, which was dedicated to the pair of gods, was donated by a Treverer. The goddess Nemetona is named here as a partner .
