Nik & Jay
Nik & Jay are a Danish hip-hop duo from Værløse and are the most successful rappers in their home country.
Career
Niclas Genckel Petersen (* 1980) and Jannik Brandt Thomsen (* 1981) belonged to different bands before they merged in 2002 as Nik & Jay . With the debut album of the same name, they made their breakthrough in their first year. It reached number two on the Danish charts and was awarded double platinum for 100,000 records sold. At the following Danish Music Awards they won the awards for best newcomer and for the hit of the year, the song Hot . With him they also won the audience award at the Danish DeeJay Awards .
The next albums by Nik & Jay were released every two years and even surpassed the success of the debut. The album, entitled 2 , reached number one in the charts in 2005 and was in the top 40 for well over a year. In the same year they were also involved in Giv til Asia , a charity campaign by Danish musicians for the tsunami victims in Asia . The jointly recorded song Hvor små vi er was number one in the Danish charts for 14 weeks (plus one week in 2007) and, with over three million copies (10 times platinum), is one of the most successful releases in Denmark. In the same year Nik & Jay also received the Nordic Music Award for the most successful Danish artist.
The next album 3: Fresh-fri-fly from 2007 missed number one, but with over 150,000 copies sold (triple platinum) it was the best-selling to date. This album was also in the charts for over a year.
In 2007 the duo recorded the song Hvad nu hvis together with the singer Alex . It was intended as a benefit song for UNICEF . It became a number one hit and with over 60,000 units sold (double platinum), it brought in 1.1 million kronor for the UN Children's Fund.
In the following years there was no real studio album. Instead, they released a best-of album in 2008 called De største (translated The Greatest ), which also contained three new songs. Of these, Kommer igen reached number one, as did the album, which was at the top for five weeks and once again reached triple platinum. After that they released repeatedly individual songs, which were also in the charts, and worked successfully with artists such as DJ Morten Breum and singer Burhan G together. With him they had another number one hit with Tættere på himlen . Domestic starring Morten Breum came in third and was voted Hit of the Year at the DeeJay Awards, her fifth award in eight years.
It wasn't until 2011 that Nik & Jay released a new studio album. Engle eller dæmoner was the duo's third number one album and Mod solnedgangen was their third number one hit. For the first time, English-language songs were included on the album, but they were not released as a single. After the success, they received the honorary award at the Danish Music Awards . The following year they recorded the song Vi vandt i dag together with the Danish national soccer team , the Landsholdet , before the European soccer championship in 2012 and thus had a number two hit.
With the next production, the two Danes planned to move abroad, especially to Germany. For the English-language song United , Aura Dione was won as co-writer and Lisa Rowe as singer. Rowe lives in Germany and later that year had a chart hit in Germany as the singer of the song Feed Me Diamonds by Alex C. With Nik & Jay and the song United , she came first in Denmark. The single was also released in Germany in July 2013. The duo had previously performed several times in Germany, including as a tour accompanist for Sean Paul at his concerts in Germany. In Germany, however, the song could not place in the charts. The album United , which was released that same year, came in second in Denmark. In addition to the title track, five other songs on the album made it into the Danish charts.
