Nika ( Pashtun نيکه ولسوالۍ, Persian ولسوالی نیکه) is a district in the north of the Afghan province of Paktika .

geography

The main town of the district is Nika . Other localities in the district are Oshakay , Mangal , Alaqadari Naka , Bazak , Torikhe and Marzek . The Sar Hawza district lies to the west , Urgun to the south and Ziruk to the east . In the north, Nika borders the Zumat district of the Paktia province .

Residents

According to the Afghanistan Statistic Yearbook 2010–2011 , the district has 12,000 inhabitants, 6,300 men and 5,800 women.

history

The region is the scene of the war between the Afghan government and the insurgent Taliban .

On September 18, 2014, the Afghan National Army (ANA), supported from the air by international allies, carried out a night operation in Nika. According to the Afghanistan Analysts Network , five civilians were killed and two injured.

In early June 2015, a Taliban ammunition dump was destroyed in a NATO air strike in Nika.
