Nikolai Kaufman

Nikolai Jankow Kaufman ( Bulgarian Николай Янков Кауфман ; born September 23, 1925 in Russe , Bulgaria , † March 26, 2018 ) was a Bulgarian ethnomusicologist , composer and folklorist .

In 1952 he graduated from the National Music Academy Sofia in the subjects of trumpet and music theory. From 1952 to 1988 he worked first at the Music Institute, then at the Institute for Folklore of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences . In 1978/79 he became a professor at the National Music Academy, later he also taught at the Free University of Varna .

Kaufman compiled one of the largest collections of Bulgarian folk songs and made great contributions to the preservation of Bulgarian folklore . He was one of the most important field researchers, visited over 2,000 communities in the country and recorded over 40,000 folk songs and instrumental pieces, including many melodies from Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews in Bulgaria. He composed around 2,000 choral songs, 240 instrumental pieces, dance and piano music. He also wrote numerous scientific treatises, writings and studies and was a co-founder and active author of the magazine Bulgarian Folklore .

His arrangements on the second album Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (1988), which received a Grammy in 1989, became known worldwide . In 2000 the album Cosmic Voices from Bulgaria - A Portrait of Nikolai Kaufman was released , which contains exclusively arrangements from his pen.
