Nikolai Nikolaevich Yanushkevich ( Russian Николай Николаевич Янушкевич ; born May 1, jul. / 13. May  1868 greg. , † February 1918 at Oredezh River ) was an Imperial Russian officer, since 1914 General of Infantry and from March 1914 to September 1915 Chief of General Staff of the Imperial Russian Army .

Life

Coming from the nobility of the Pskov governorate, Janushkevich joined the cadet corps at a young age, which he completed in 1885. This was followed by training at the Michael Artillery School in Saint Petersburg until 1888 , after which he came to the artillery of the life guards as a Podporutschik . In 1896 he completed training at the Academy of the General Staff as a staff captain and was transferred to the Vilna military district, where he was assistant to the senior adjutant until 1898. After serving in the Petersburg General Staff and in the War Ministry, he became head of the legal department in the War Ministry's office in 1905 and was promoted as such to major general in 1909 . From 1911 to 1913 he was then assistant to the head of the firm. From 1910 he also held an extraordinary professorship for military administration at the Nikolaus Academy of the General Staff before he was appointed full professor in 1911. In early 1913 he was promoted to Lieutenant General Head of the Academy.

With Yuri Danilov in February 1915

In March 1914, Janushkevich was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Imperial Army as successor to Yakov Schilinski . His appointment came as a surprise because he had never really led troops and was only an expert in administrative matters. Rumor has it that he owed his appointment to his skill as a courtier and the fact that he would not pose a threat to Minister of War Sukhomlinov . He delegated a large part of his duties to his Quartermaster General Yuri Danilov . With the outbreak of World War I , Januschkewitsch became Chief of Staff of the Stawka under the Supreme Commander, Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich , whom he followed to the Caucasus after his dismissal in autumn 1915. Discharged from the army after the February Revolution of 1917 with a pension and permission to wear uniform, he was arrested in Mogilev in early 1918 and was supposed to be taken to Petrograd, but was killed on the way near Oredesch.
