Nicholas I (Werle)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus I, Lord of Werle (* around 1210, † May 14, 1277 ); was Lord of Rostock from 1229 to 1234 and Lord of Werle from 1234 to 1277 .

Nikolaus was a younger son of Prince Heinrich Borwin II and his wife Christine († after 1248), a daughter of King Wilhelm I of Scotland .

In the course of the first division of Mecklenburg in 1234 he was awarded the rule (principality) of Werle. Nikolaus took over for his brother Heinrich Borwin III. the administration of the state of Rostock up to the age of majority. Together with Barnim I, he waged war against the Margraviate of Brandenburg and lost Perleberg , Wesenberg and Penzlin . But after the death of his brother Pribislaw I , he was able to secure Parchim , Plau and Goldberg for himself. In 1275 he still settled a fratricidal war between his sons, who divided up the country after his death.

He exerted a strong influence on the founding of cities in his area, which he saw as a means of colonization. Nicholas I is considered to be the founder of the cities of Penzlin (founded March 14, 1235) and Röbel (founded January 21, 1261).

Around 1231 he married Jutta von Anhalt , the daughter of Prince Heinrich I of Anhalt .

Nikolaus I probably died in Plau , from where his body was brought to the Doberaner Munster for burial .
