Live and act

After attending primary school in Hettenleidelheim, Osterroth, whose father was a butcher, began working as a miner in clay mining at the age of 14 . He carried out this work - with a brief interruption due to his military service with the 18th Bavarian Infantry Regiment from 1895 to 1897, until 1902.

From 1902 to 1907 he worked as a storekeeper for a consumer association. During this time Nikolaus Osterroth was already working as party secretary of the SPD and editor of the party newspaper "Saarwacht" in Saarbrücken . It was chairman of the Saarbrücken-St. Johann.

From 1907 to 1913 he worked as a workers secretary in Waldenburg / Silesia , in 1910 he took over the chairmanship of the SPD Waldenburg, which he held until 1923. In 1913 he was given the job of district manager of the miners' association in Hamm / Westf. Here he was active until 1919. During the First World War, Osterroth took part as a Landsturmmann on the Eastern Front from 1915 to 1917.

In Hamm-Soest he became city councilor and chairman of the local SPD constituency organization. In 1918 he also took over the chairmanship of the workers 'and soldiers' council in Hamm.

From 1919 to 1920 Nikolaus Osterroth was a member of the Weimar National Assembly . From 1921 to 1933 he was a member of the Prussian state parliament. From 1919 to 1923 he was a mining advisor in the Reich Ministry of Economics. From 1922 he took on the role of a consultant in the Reich Ministry of Labor.

From 1924 to 1933 he was a deputy board member and socio-political director of the Preussische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG ( Preussag ) in Werder / Havel and a member of the supervisory board of two other mining companies.

“In the new form of business (the Preussag, note) a spirit will develop in which the officials will feel at home and not as a foreign body. I believe the staff will be able to join together to form a communal family spirit in which everyone feels that they are the trustees of the goods entrusted to them. "

- Nikolaus Osterroth : Inaugural address, January 1, 1924

The post of social director was introduced here for the first time. Nikolaus Osterroth saw his job as holding the new Preussag company together internally.

He was also a city councilor in Werder.

Nikolaus Osterroth founded the newspaper Schlesische Bergwacht in 1911 as the "organ for the Lower Silesian industrial district" in Waldenburg. The last edition appeared in 1933.

Nikolaus Osterroth committed suicide with his wife on September 19, 1933 while in exile in Paris.
