Nikolaus Vogt (* around 1490 in Lunden ; † 1564 or 1565 ) was a German lawyer and first chancellor of the County of Oldenburg .

biography

Vogt's origins and early life are largely in the dark. It is certain that he came from Lunden and studied law and theology .

From 1506 he was enrolled at the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt ad Oder, which was newly founded that year , and in 1508 he moved to the University of Rostock . There he acquired the academic degrees of a Licentiate in Law and a Magister artium . Apparently he was ordained a Catholic priest , but later, apparently under the influence of the Reformation , resigned from the clergy and married. From 1526 he worked as a legal advisor and agent for the Counts of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst . From August 24, 1527 he was the first to be awarded the title of Chancellor of Oldenburg. The advance of Roman law made this transition necessary and as a result, the leading positions in the administration and judiciary of the German states were preferably filled by lawyers. Vogt thus represented the transition between the clergy, who had previously mainly been appointed as law firm members, and a new professional group of academically trained administrative lawyers . In this role, the lawyers became indispensable advisors to their sovereigns in all political questions. As a close confidante of Count Anton I from Oldenburg, Vogt was also able to gain great influence and, in addition to his office activities, was also responsible as superintendent for the management of church tasks in the county. In 1533 the count gave him a piece of land and in 1548 a house in Oldenburg . In addition, Vogt was also the owner of several church benefices .

Vogt resigned his offices before 1562 and died in 1564 or 1565. After his death, the Chancellery was refilled with Johann von Hall only when the office was reorganized under Johann VII. In 1573 .

family

Vogt married Adelheid Nutzhorn († 1568) in 1531 at the latest, who may have come from the von Nutzhorn family. The couple had two daughters.
