life and work

Nils Fliegner grew up in Bremen. After graduating from high school, he worked for the German edition of MAD magazine . While studying graphic design at the University of the Arts in Bremen , he began to do illustrative commissioned work for magazines (including DM , Petra , Playboy , Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin ). Later Fliegner also worked for the Focus .

He has been working as a freelance illustrator since 1993, for example for Der Feinschmecker, Geolino, Handelsblatt , Harvard Business Manager, Der Spiegel , Dein Spiegel, Reader's Digest, Süddeutsche Zeitung and various advertising agencies.

With his illustration for the cover story “The East is Strong - On Pride in the New Lands”, Fliegner became the youngest illustrator in 1994 to have made it onto the cover of the news magazine Der Spiegel . The illustration, reminiscent of the style of socialist realism, was created in piece work: he had less than twelve hours to complete.

In 2001, Fliegner provided another illustration for the Spiegel cover, this time for the cover story “Are German Students Stupid?” With both illustrations, he took part in the Spiegel exhibition “The Art of SPIEGEL - Cover Illustrations from Five Decades”, which took place between 2004 and 2008 was shown in renowned museums worldwide.
