Nilson Fanini

Nilson do Amaral Fanini (born March 18, 1932 in Curitiba , Paraná , † September 18, 2009 in Dallas , Texas ) was a Brazilian Baptist pastor and president of the World Baptist Federation .

Life

Nilson Fanini studied theology at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth (Texas) and law at the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro . From 1964 to 2005 he was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Niterói , one of the largest Protestant local churches in South America . It had 740 members at the beginning of his term of office and around 7000 when he retired. During the years of his ministry, 28 new daughter churches emerged under his leadership. His sermons were broadcast weekly by 52 radio and 110 television companies and were received by around 40 million people in Brazil and six other South American countries.

Fanini evangelized in 87 countries around the world. In Angola and Mozambique , he was the first foreign evangelist to be allowed to preach publicly at major events.

In addition to his preaching activity, Fanini was also involved in social diaconal fields. For many years he was president of the evangelical organization Reencontro , which he founded and which, in addition to spreading the Bible, is mainly active in the health and welfare sector. It operates 19 clinics that offer free treatment, an orphanage, child protection facilities, mobile gynecological stations for pregnant women and soup kitchens.

Fanini was elected head of the Brazilian Baptist Union a total of 14 times . In this position he founded the Baptist Theological Seminary Niterói in 1984 and thus created the central training facility for Brazilian Baptist pastors. From 1995 to 2000 Nilson Fanini was president of the Baptist World Federation . In the more than one hundred year history of the Alliance, he was the second president to come from South America.
