Njogu Touray

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Njogu Touray (born April 5, 1960 in Serekunda - Latri Kunda , British Gambia ) is one of the most famous contemporary visual artists from the Gambia .

Live and act

Touray is self-taught who never went to art school. As the son of a master carpenter, he began to tinker with all sorts of materials that were found in the area and on the beach, including sand and shells. In his youth he made lanterns for the Fanal procession and various African masks that are used for various cultural festivities. He later made decorations for the household.

Later he ran his own gallery from 2005 in Serrekunda - Latri Kunda on Kairaba Avenue called Sakura Art Studio - 'Tahalart' ( Tahalart = Wolof colored or making art ). Since the late 1980s he has exhibited his works in solo exhibitions around the world, in addition to Senegal, in galleries in the United States and Europe. From 2003 to 2005 his works dealt with the role of women in Gambian society. In 2004 he was awarded the Best Poster Design in Malaysia . Together with Baboucarr Etu Ndow , Touray was commissioned to create paintings for each of the 52 guests' accommodations for the 2006 summit of the African Union. In 2007, Touray was commissioned by President Jammeh to create a work for the President's residence.

In Gambia he is active as an environmental activist and works with children and introduces them to art.

His work is rich and designed with vivid colors. He combines materials that he takes from nature. His style is similar to that of Etu . For his work he chooses social topics such as the struggle for freedom in South Africa and the role of women in Gambia's society. His motifs relate to African, but also global issues: He addresses environmental problems, promiscuity and AIDS and also attacks the Western hypocrisy regarding the origin of the viruses . But it also takes up current issues. In the painting I woke up one morning (July 30th 1981) he takes a stand on a coup in Gambia. Many of his pictures can also be seen as a purely experimental play of shapes and colors.
