No frills is a term from business and describes a measure to reduce costs in companies . No frills (English no frills ) means something , no-frills straightforward : the costs can be lowered so the provider Omission of non-essential parts of a product or service that the sales prices are significantly lower than comparable offers.

Originally, the concept was mainly implemented by supermarkets. Low-cost airlines and various mobile phone discounters followed this model later .

Airlines

With the no-frills concept, the low-cost airlines are able to offer lower prices than the traditional airlines .

In comparison to conventional scheduled flights or charter flights, passengers can see, for example, that daily newspapers , meals, drinks and luggage transport are not free, but are available for a fee. Other measures to reduce costs include the use of less central airports, the avoidance of connecting flights and exclusive direct sales via the Internet . However, internal operational no-frills concepts such as the non-existent connection to IATA and BSP as well as the optimized route and vehicle scheduling and the resulting intensive revenue management are decisive .

Since the airlines implement individual elements of the no-frills concept to different extents, it is often problematic today to make a clear assignment of an airline to the category of no-frills carrier.

Cellular provider

Since Tchibo Mobil was launched on October 4, 2004, more and more mobile communications discounters have been entering the market. Mostly they are subsidiaries founded by large cell phone companies that share their cell phone networks. In contrast to traditional mobile network operators, processing takes place exclusively via the Internet and telephone, there are no subsidized cell phones, no branches or dealers. The fee schedule is deliberately kept simple, there is only one price per minute in all networks and at any time. However, roaming , 0190/0900 service numbers and special services are often expensive.

Supermarkets

In the case of supermarkets , the no-frills concept is evident in discounters with a reduced range of goods and a rather sparse equipment. The goods are often sold directly from the pallet . It is also understood to be products without complex packaging. The own brand of the former supermarket chain Kwik Save was called No frills .

Accommodation establishments

Examples are the B&B Hotels from France, the Motel-One group from Germany and Ibis budget . Savings can be made in the following areas, some of which are labor-intensive:

  • Reservations can only be made over the Internet
  • There are no minibars , drinks are available from the machine
  • Breakfast is self-service and often has to be paid for separately
  • Access to the room via a numeric code
