Noel McGhie

Noel McGhie (* 1944 in Jamaica ) is a British jazz musician ( drums , percussion , composition ) of Caribbean origin.

McGhie immigrated to the British Isles at the age of 18, where he studied music from 1964 to 1970. As a drummer he is influenced by Roy Haynes , Max Roach , Philly Joe Jones , Joe Morello and especially Rashied Ali . In 1968 he composed the theater music for two pieces by Fernando Arrabal , which the Drama Society at Oxford University performed.

In 1970 he worked in the Netherlands with Peter van de Locht and Boy Raaymakers and with Clifford Thornton in Paris. In 1971 he moved to France with his wife and children, where he deepened his studies at the Conservatoire Municipal de Clichy . In Paris, Steve Lacy brought him into his quintet. He worked again and again with François Tusques . He also played with Archie Shepp , Frank Wright , Noah Howard , Bobby Few , Byard Lancaster , Mal Waldron and Anthony Braxton , and later with Alan Silva and Chico Freeman . He has also recorded with Colette Magny ( Repression , 1971), Marion Williams and Geoffrey Oryema ( Gospel Caravan , 1979) and Gil Evans ( Parabola , 1978). He also toured with Myriam Makeba , with Hal Singer (as a member of the Hal Singer All Stars 1996/1997) and with Rhoda Scott . He worked as a teacher at the Institut d'Art de Culture et de Perception in Paris.
