Nok Kundi ( Urdu نوک کنڈی) is a small town in western Pakistan in the Chagai district of Balochistan Province .

The place is on the national road N-40 about 140 kilometers east of the Iranian- Pakistani border crossing Mīrjāveh - Taftan . The Quetta – Zahedan railway ( Trans-Baluchistan Railway ) runs through the center of the town and runs from Quetta west to the border crossing at Taftan and on to Zahedan in Iran. However, the route is often affected by floods or shifting dunes , both in winter and in the summer months , so that there is often only irregular train traffic.

Nok Kundi means "blunt point" in Pashtun . From this region of western Pakistan, which was originally inhabited by Scythians and Parthians , the house of the Surenas founded an empire. Historically, the land is known to the people as Drangiana "water producing land". It was captured by the Greeks and Hellenized as Drangiana in Greek literature . The original word for this region still survives in Pashtun as Zaranda ("water mill" or "spring"). This word also occurs in old Persian as Zaranka ("water country").

Today the city consists of many small bazaars , a post office, a nearly 900 meter long runway for airplanes, a health center and other civil and military facilities. Baluch with scimitar on the hip determine the townscape. They often sit in front of the numerous adobe buildings and drink the much sought-after hot Tschai (tea). Temperatures in summer reach well over 40 degrees Celsius , sometimes even to just under 50 degrees. A very strong and hot dry wind often blows, which causes the sun to increasingly disappear behind a wall of dust and sand in the afternoon, so that dusk arrives earlier than expected.

The Australian mining company Tethyan (Australia) has invested in the mountain ranges around Nok Kundi with the "Reko Diq Project", through its subsidiary Tethyan Copper Company Pakistan, in the largest Pakistani copper and gold exploration project. The company has established partnerships with local groups that have improved the social infrastructure.
