Hays is a city and seat of the county government of Ellis County in the US state of Kansas with a population of over 20,000.
The place was one of the most important transshipment points for cattle trails at the end of the 19th century .
Fort Hays State University and Hays Regional Airport ( HYS ) are now located here .
