Small group in California

Nolina interrata is a species of the genus Nolina in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). English common names are "Dehesa Beargrass" and "Burried Nolina".

description

Nolina interrata usually grows without a trunk, but sometimes forms a short trunk. It is rhizomatous and forms groups up to 1.8 m in diameter. The variable bluish, linear-lanceolate leaves that fall to the ground are 30 to 140 cm long and 8 to 15 mm wide. The leaf margins are serrated.

The inflorescence is 0.6 to 1.4 m high with numerous long variable, ramifications. The white to cream colored flowers are 3 to 4 mm long and 1.5 to 2 mm wide. The flowering period extends from May to June.

When ripe, the woody capsule fruits are 7 to 10 mm in diameter. The yellowish to brown, egg-shaped to elongated seeds are 4 to 6 mm, 4 mm in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Nolina interrata is very rare. It is common in the US state of California and in Mexico in Baja California at altitudes of 200 to 700 m. It grows in grassland on sandy to stony soil on flat hills and is associated with Yucca whipplei and various species of cacti.

Nolina interrata is a representative of the Arborescentes section and is currently little known. It is closely related to Nolina cismontana , but this one has a longer, more imposing inflorescence and green leaves . The species is fire resistant.

The first description was in 1946 by Howard Scott Gentry .

At the request of the United States, Nolina interrata was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species on July 29, 1983 . After a re-evaluation of the status, it was downgraded to Appendix II on September 13, 2007.

Nolina interrata is endangered by new settlements. It is listed on the California State List as a rare and endangered species.
