Nonnenfels

The Nonnenfels , also called Nonnen-Fels or Nonnenfelsen , is a natural monument on a foothill of the Schlamiesen mountain above the Isenach valley . It is located west of Bad Dürkheim in the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate . The ruins of a medieval rock castle are located on the rock .

history

There is no information about the builder or the residents of the castle. The original name of the castle has also not been passed down. Assumptions range from an original wooden castle with a construction date from 1000 to 1200 to the construction as a bailey for the east-facing, directly visible Hardenburg from the Salian period in the 13th century. A more precise dating is no longer possible due to the use as a quarry and rock falls. There is also no reliable information about the destruction and abandonment. It is believed that it was destroyed in the 17th century.

investment

Of the 20-meter-long, small rock castle , only elaborations in the rock, such as door frames, beam holes, steps, a supposed stone altar and small masonry remain. A natural, artificially enlarged neck ditch can still be seen in the western area. The original entrance to the castle was also in the western area and not like today's entrance from the east of the Klaustal valley.

The castle is freely accessible at all times.

legend

According to legend, the small castle was built by Adelinde, the daughter of Count von Leiningen. She once lived on the Hardenburg and fell in love with the squire Otto (or Ruprecht). The father did not tolerate this liaison . The squire was sent on a crusade to the Holy Land. When a comrade of the squire reported about his death in Jerusalem during the fight against the Saracens, Adelinde lost all hope and went to the monastery to soothe her pain between prayer and charity for the sick. But she didn't last long there either. With a friend, she built her new home as a nun opposite the Hardenburg. From then on she dealt with healing and herbalism and remained unrecognized. One day her father fell while hunting and was seriously injured. You went to the nun and asked for help. Her father did not recognize her, but she saved him. After the count had recovered, he visited the nun in her little castle and recognized his daughter. He asked her to come back to the Hardenburg, but she refused. However, she often came to the neighboring castle to help the sick and poor as a retreat .
