Nora Cecil (born September 26, 1878 in England , † May 1, 1951 in Los Angeles , California , USA ) was an English (or Irish) American actress .

Life

Nora Cecil made her stage debut in London around the turn of the century, and later moved to America. After her earliest known silent film appearance in 1915, she acted in almost two hundred films up until 1947. She had one of her first film roles mentioned in the credits in 1918 in the silent film Prunella by director Maurice Tourneur . In the 1928 film A Trick of (the) Hearts , Cecil was allowed to play her first leading role. She also played a larger role as a witch in the horror film Seven Footprints to Satan , which appeared in the following year 1929. However, she gave her best-known performances in numerous, often smaller supporting roles , in which, because of her external appearance, she played predominantly contentious mothers-in-law, unmarried aunts, old maids, teachers, carers or resolute landladies.

From 1932 to 1934 she worked alongside legendary comedians such as Laurel and Hardy ( The Devil Brothers , 1932), Will Rogers ( Dr. Bull , 1933) and WC Fields ( The Good Old Days , 1934). 1939 Cecil played in the Western -Klassiker Ringo by John Ford , the feisty landlady who, then, a prostitute sells her first alcohol-seeking lodgers together with other ladies from the city.

The actress's name appears in various variants in cast lists, including Nora or Norah Cecil or Cecile.
